Bariatric surgery increases fertility.
Weight loss (especially fat tissue) restores hormonal balance, which in turn restores menstrual cycle.
After bariatric surgery, there is a lower risk for adverse outcomes (e.g. pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, macrosomia and premature birth), compared to women with obesity without surgery. However, operated women might be at increased risk for complications such as intra-uterine growth restriction or intestinal hernias.
